Sin Chao Gardens - 新潮園

With ample free parking, very reasonable pricing and so near my hood, this a real gem for Teo Chew cuisine. I wonder why didn't I find out about this restaurant earlier?

There are 2 floors in this historical shop house along River Valley Road where the restaurant is located.

On the lower floor is the Teo Chew porridge counter which serves an array of pre-cooked Teo Chew dishes from simple stew vegetables in light savoury broth and omelette, to more heavy stuff like steamed crabs and braised pork and duck to go with comforting bowls of plain porridge.

The upper floor houses a private room and the main dining hall where most diners would order from their ala carte menu.

Teochew cuisine is known for using minimum ingredients, prioritising light and natural flavours. We ordered a few traditional Teo Chew dishes like steamed pomfret, braised duck, Pork Trotter Jelly, Tee Poh Kai Lan, Chai Por Kway Teow etc and we were impressed. Each dish was prepared using minimal seasoning and flavouring and cooked in ways that brought forth the freshness of each ingredient.

My only complaint was the dishes were served all together at one go. We had to ask them to slow down after a few dishes only to be told that that was their style. So if you prefer to be served dish by dish like me, do inform the staff when you place order.

But overall a very satisfying Chao Shan dining experience and I would definitely be back soon.
